Tactics for a Greener Lab

You see it every day in the lab: bins overflowing with plastics like pipette tips and racks, microcentrifuge tubes, and reagent reservoirs. Indeed, biomedical labs are estimated to produce around 5.5 million tons of plastic waste annually, which is approximately the weight of 67 cruise liners! All that plastic has consequences for the environment.

Mettler Toledo and Rainin are committed to helping our customers be more sustainable. We develop products that use fewer resources, are easier to recycle, and whose eco-credentials are third-party verified. For example, sustainable pipette tip racks and refill alternatives from Rainin use less plastic overall and are primarily made from PETE, which is much easier to recycle. We are also proud to partner with My Green Lab, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the sustainability of lab research and providing support and education for labs that want to develop a culture of sustainability.

While single-use plastics are necessary for research, labs can take action to reduce the environmental impact of their work. This white paper provides guidance on reducing plastic lab waste, including practical tips and case studies.
