What is a biodegradable pipette tip rack?

EarthRack’s lid and base are made of biodegradable bamboo and sugar cane cellulose material that can be composted at municipal facilities. If deposited in a landfill, they will biodegrade. EarthRack’s cellulose components contribute no net increase in atmospheric CO2. Because the small, recyclable polypropylene tip deck is the only plastic component, EarthRack also significantly reduces plastic use and waste.

Are pipette tip boxes recyclable?

Rainin offers several types of pipette tip boxes made from different materials, including polypropylene, PETE (PET), and cellulose. In addition, all Rainin LTS and standard pipet tip decks are made of polypropylene. EarthRack cellulose tip boxes should be composted rather than recycled. Both polypropylene and PETE can be recycled, but fewer municipal recycling facilities accept polypropylene. We recommend contacting your Environmental Health and Safety department and local municipal recycling facilities for guidelines.

What to do with empty pipette tip boxes?

Rainin offers a variety of pipette tip boxes made from various materials that should be disposed of differently. We recommend contacting your Environmental Health and Safety department and local municipal waste facilities for composting and recycling guidelines for your institution.

Rainin LTS and standard tip racks are made of #5 polypropylene, which can be recycled in some municipalities.

TerraRack, SpaceSaver, and Green-Pak are made from #1 PETE (PET), which is one of the most recycled types of plastic.

EarthRack is made primarily from cellulose, which can be composted, but it will also biodegrade in landfills.

What is an environmentally-friendly pipette tip box?

Rainin offers several pipette tip rack options designed to be environmentally-friendly and help meet your sustainability objectives. We’ve taken a three-pronged approach to reducing plastic rack waste:

  • Reducing the amount of plastic – particularly #5 polypropylene that, when recycled, downcycles into lower-quality products (e.g., doormats, crates, etc.). For example, TerraRack, SpaceSaver, and Green-Pak tip boxes and refills can reduce plastic use by 50-80%.

  • Replacing polypropylene with PETE (PET), which is more widely recycled. Recycled #1 PETE can be made into the same or similar products (e.g. water bottles). For example, TerraRack is made of PETE rather than polypropylene.

  • Avoiding plastic components, instead using natural, compostable materials like the plant fiber in EarthRack.
